Salmon have long been loved in fishing communitites around North America and other places where they spawn. Every year, many kinds of salmon rush up rivers from the ocean to end up in lakes or slow rivers and lay their eggs. Fishermen wait for the first rush of salmon along the rivers and in the rivers and are secluded from grizzly bears since they also wait for the fish. Usually only large rivers can accomodate the amount of fish that rush to continue the cycle of life. The ocean with the most species is considered the pacific ocean with its many fishermen riding it and wanting to catch the best fish.

History

Salmon have been fished by the Native Americans for many thousands of years and the fish were also considered a sacred symbol. The Natives fished the salmon and ate most, if not, all the meat and the organs they offered and used the rest for other things. But then came the Europeens. The white people over-fished the salmon but only ate the meat and threw everything away wasting countless amounts of fish. The salmon have faced problems before and are now faced with their biggest problems. But when they go to lay their eggs up rivers away from oceans, they have to face fishermen in the water waiting for them, Native Americain fishermen waiting to catch them as well and as well as grizzly bears who are very hungry.

Facts

The Chinook Salmon is commonly found on the West side of North America and on the East side of Asia. The male Chinook and female Chinook's weight and size is shared at around 50.8 cm to around 83 cm long and would weigh around 10 to 50 pounds but records insist it could weigh more at around 120 pounds. The diet of the Chinook consists of usually plankton, other fish and seaweed. Occasionally they will eat the odd starfish and jellyfish. Chinooks often have a very high amount of fat in them to help them get up stream into lakes. The fat is Omega-3 fatty acids which are actually very healthy for the heart.

The Coho Salmon is know to be one of the best salmon to eat. The Coho Salmon is also known to be very elusive since the population is very small because of over-fishing and its population has fallen into protective laws which make it only available in its season. The Coho salmon's size varies between 70 cm for average adults and the weight would be 5 to 10 pounds. The adult Coho's colour is ranged at, in the ocean, a light silver colour to a red colour in the rivers heading to spawn. Cohos tend to live near the edge or Northern Japan and Eastern Russia to Alaska, British-Columbia and California. The Coho is also known to be one of the best salmon to eat. Part of the reason why they were overfished was because they are a delicacy. Coho salmon are born in rivers and live there for a partial amount of their lives. Once they move to open water, their scales and head, tail start to change colour and develop shiny scales on their sides, a light body and a dark metallic back and head. In the spawning phase, their sides turn reddish and their bellies a very light pink.

The Sockeye salmon is commonly found in the pacific and very little, the arctic ocean near British-Colombia, Washington, California, Alaska, Russia and Japan commonly have sockeye come into their rivers and spawn. Sockeye are known to have a delicious meat and is loved by the coastal countries that live with them. The average adult weighs around 5 to 15 pounds and is 60 to 80 cm long. Once in the sea, the young salmon's colour is silver for its sides, black spots on its tail and a bluish head. Once in the spawn phase, their bodies turn bright red-pink and their head turns greenish. The diet of the sockeye is usually feed on zooplankton once they reach the ocean after the juvenile stage. The sockeye is also known to be the third most common salmon after pink and chum.
